The Bible is not a book of ethics filled with rules and guidelines about how to live effective lives. It is not the rulebook from which we extract the right vision and values and apply them like a template in our time. It is not an ancient Chicken Soup for the Soul or Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. It doesn’t invite us to find personal, psychological guidelines for living. On the contrary, the Scriptures challenge and turn upside down some of the most basic and cherished assumptions we have about what God is doing in the world.
